Transferring and Scattering Remains

Thank you for trusting us to provide a home for your loved one’s remains
Transferring cremated remains can be an emotional experience for some. However, studies have shown that having an object to remind you of your loved one can also be healing.

You might consider asking a friend or family member to support you either in person or by phone or video call as you perform the transfer.
What to expect

Cremated remains are not true ashes, but rather processed bone fragments that resemble white or gray dusty sand. They may be heavier and coarser than you expect. The remains are non-toxic.

Preparation
To prepare to transfer the cremated remains, you will want to gather these materials:

  • Newspaper or a towel
  • Scissors
  • Cremated remains in the temporary urn and original plastic bag
  • The funnel provided with your urn
  • The new plastic bag provided with your urn
  • The Solstice full-size, keepsake urn(s) or scatter tube that will house the remains
  • A mask to keep you from breathing in small particles (optional)
  • Gloves to keep your hands clean (optional)
Choose your transfer method

Scatter tubes
Pour the remains directly into the Solstice scatter tube. Scatter tubes should be used without an interior bag.

Urns
OPTION 1:  Simply remove the original plastic bag of remains from the temporary urn and place it into the new Solstice urn if the opening widths allow.

OPTION 2:  Pour the remains directly into the Solstice urn, without using an interior plastic bag.

OPTION 3: Place the provided sealable interior bag into the Solstice urn, then pour remains into the bag.

We recommend using the provided interior bag to keep the remains from spilling out if the urn is ever tipped over, falls or breaks.
Choose your method for transfer from the options above. Place your Solstice urn or scatter tube on the newspaper or towel and locate your tools and temporary urn within close reach.

If using, place the provided plastic bag into the Solstice urn and make sure that the bag is expanded to fill the volume of the urn so that it can accept the full amount of remains. The bag opening should extend above the mouth of the urn to make pouring in the remains easier.
If you choose to wear a mask and gloves, put them on.

Open the temporary urn and remove the plastic bag containing the remains.

If you are removing the remains from the original bag, cut a small hole in a corner of the bag and slowly pour the remains into the interior bag placed inside the Solstice urn or directly into the Solstice scatter tube (no bag). You may choose to use the included funnel for this step.

If any cremated remains have spilled during the transfer, scoop them from the paper or towel underneath and add to the urn or scatter tube.

Close the seal of the interior bag and fold down the top of the bag so that it is fully contained within the urn and will not interfere with the lid closure.

If you wish to seal the new Solstice urn we recommend an epoxy or super glue adhesive.

Wipe the lid with a damp cloth and dry. Then place several drops of epoxy or super glue on the rim of the urn according to the instructions on your chosen glue bottle. Place the lid onto the urn body, adjust it to center and carefully wipe off any excess dirt and glue with a damp cloth.

Your Solstice urn is now ready to be placed in a special location of honor.
